Land Use Planning – Concept, Tools and Applications

Rural areas in developing countries are currently facing many challenges such as achieving food security, mitigating and adapting to climate change and at the same time fostering economic growth. With rural areas highly depending on agriculture, a key focus when facing those challenges and increasing the living conditions of the rural population lies on land. Fertile land in rural areas is becoming scarcer due to population growth, pollution, urbanization etc. On the remaining land, local, national and international users with different socio-economic status and power compete to achieve various objectives.

Land Use Planning can help to find a balance among these competing and sometimes contradictory objectives. It is understood as a social process aiming at a sustainable land use and the adjustment of interests in rural areas.

The present study does not only focus on methods, strategies and tools but also includes a wide range of applications for land use planning with concrete examples. The manual has been prepared by an interdisciplinary group of more than 50 experts with land use planning experiences in various countries all over the world.
